5 reasons why Generation X are not as reliant on technology in their everyday lives

Today, the pace of technological progress continues to speed forward unabated, and an evergrowing market of apps and devices have the potential to revolutionise the way we live our lives on a daily basis. But not everyone is fully benefiting from these new digital technologies, and the one of the most significant divisions between whether people adopt technology or steer clear of it is generational.

Though everyone in Western society has access to the same technology and software that can help make their life simpler, different generations, broadly speaking, use it to a different degree. Millenials for example, are considered to be a generation on the move, exploiting the full range of mobile technologies, from smartphones and tablets to the cloud and collaborative software, to boost their productivity.

But what of Generation Xers, the generation that previously welcomed MTV and Grunge with alleged cynical disaffection? Though a recent US study showed comparable levels of ownership of tech devices like tablets and smartphones between Generation Xers and Millenials, the former are often more reluctant to use certain software products and productivity solutions, for a variety of reasons. Here we explore some of those reasons, and unpick how PDF software can actually overcomes these blockers to optimise productivity.

Problem:

‘I don’t have the time to learn new software, it will take a lot of effort.’

    Solution:

Many software solutions are easy and intuitive to use these days, due in part to the high rate of churn between people downloading and deleting apps from the huge selection on online app stores – if software is hard to use, people will very quickly seek an easier alternative, and this in turn puts the onus on developers to create with user-friendliness firmly in mind. Nuance’s Power PDF for example is created to be logical and easy to use, and operates very similarly to the well-known Microsoft Office suite.

      Problem:

‘If I digitise my documents, won’t I need to spend ages typing and re-typing?’

        Solution:

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology means that you can create a fully editable and searchable digital version of a paper document within a matter of seconds. While conventional scanning processes create a flat image, OCR actually recognises the characters, so that the document is created as text and can be easily output into many different software packages. Nuance’s Omnipage and Power PDF feature advanced OCR technology with a high level of accuracy.

          Problem:

‘Aren’t there major security issues with storing things digitally and in the cloud? I’m concerned my personal information could be stolen.’

            Solution:

Power PDF can be used to encrypt your documents with 128-bit or 256-bit security, meaning that they can only be accessed with the correct password. It is also possible to censor, or “redact”, vital pieces of personal information so that they cannot be seen.

              Problem:

‘I find reading on paper easier than reading on a screen.’

                Solution:

With PDF software like Power PDF you gain access to a variety of tools that can help you to read documents more easily. As well as being able to scan through the text quickly for the part you’re looking for, you can search through it instantaneously, and also edit, make additions and highlight bits you’d like to come back to. You can even sign documents digitally (which is legally binding), so that you don’t need to print things like contracts out. It also includes a “loupe” tool similar to a digital magnifying glass for easier viewing.

                  Problem:

‘How will I find my documents when I need them?’

                    Solution:

Store your documents digitally wherever you choose. Once you’ve digitised your document you can easily save it in a specific folder, upload it to cloud storage, make copies, transfer it to your other devices, or share with other people. Power PDF and Omnipage allow you to search through PDF documents on your entire computer just in case you forget where one is located.
